Action Alert: Tell Metro to Commit to Safe Routes to School

We would like to alert For Every Kid Coalition members and supporters about our great opportunity to increase dedicated funding for sidewalks and bike lanes near schools. In recent meetings of Metro’s Joint Policy Advisory Committee on Transportation (JPACT) a large group of decision makers sent a signal about the future of transportation funding, and it wasn’t good for For Every Kid’s priorities.

We have an opportunity to increase the funding allocated to bike and pedestrian projects near schools. We believe that dedicating funds is truly the only way to ensure our priorities are funded regularly and consistently.

We need your help to increase this critical source of dedicated funding. NOW is the time to give elected leaders serving on JPACT and Metro Councilors the following message:

  • Please support $15 Million in dedicated funding for Safe Routes to School.
  • Our region needs to invest more money, not less, in safe bike lanes and sidewalks.
  • Please prioritize projects based on proximity to schools with higher rates of students eligible for free and reduced lunch.

(Button not working? Email addresses and text below.)

Several leaders from across the region signaled their early desire to eliminate dedicated funding for bike and pedestrian projects and open up the precious Regional Flexible Funds to be spent on road projects of any type, including freight projects. This should be a huge concern for anyone who wants safer streets with a complete networks of sidewalks. By dedicating funds to Safe Routes to School, we will see more funds for bike and pedestrian projects, not less.

Subject: Please support $15M in dedicated funding for safe routes to school

Body:

Dear JPACT members and Metro Councilors,

I am committed to safer streets and healthy kids. Please support safe routes to school by dedicating $15 million for projects to make it safe to walk, bike, and access transit to school.

Our region needs to invest more money, not less, in safe bike lanes and sidewalks, especially near schools where kids need it most.

Please dedicate $15 million on our Regional Flexible Funds to Safe Routes to School. These funds are one of the most important sources of needed funding for sidewalks and bike lanes.

I am also submitting these comments as part of the public comment process for the Regional Flexible Funds Allocation.

I look forward to your response on this important issue.

Thank you,

    Hello All,

Please support all efforts to ensure safe routes to school for our children. Being able to walk to school safely is so important for the children’s health and development, and for parents who otherwise cannot provide alternative transportation options. I used to walk 1 mile to my middle school each way, growing up in Maryland, because that was my only option. And I want all children to have the option of walking to school safely.

    Thank you,
    Cecilia Tsai
